Educational systems and technologies on the river and the sea "STORM"

"ROV Pilot Technician Grade II" Training Course

In accordance with IMCA recommendations new ROV operation employing staff should complete additional professional training on the following courses:

  • “Basic Introductory Course for New Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Personnel” in accordance with IMCA R 002 Guidance which is considered as standard of the field for the new personnel.
  • "Training of Remotely Operated Vehicle pilots for obtaining certificate "ROV Pilot/Technician Grade II" in accordance with IMCA C 005 “Guidance on Competence Assurance and Assessment” and IMCA R010 “Guidance on outline syllabi for ROV-related Training Courses”.

Content of the courses held by STORM Training Center covers all competence levels listed in IMCA C005 rev2.

After completing the training and successful exam graduates are issued “ROV Pilot Technician Grade II” certificates and approved in the field “ROV Pilot Technician Log Book” issued by IMCA.

To receive the above mentioned certificates students should:

  • Comply with minimum requirements for qualification of the new ROV personnel.
  • Possess the corresponding personal attributes.
  • Have the particular set of documents.

In STORM Training Centre training of ROV pilots is organized in accordance with “STORM-M” Technology in 3 steps:

  • Theoretical training;
  • Drilling of practical skills;
  • Knowledge evaluation, including assessment of the theoretic knowledge and practical skills.

Duration of training is three weeks.

For the first stage 2 weeks are required. Theoretical training is carried out in the distance form with the use of CBT Library "Basic Introductory Course for New Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Personnel" and "Training of Remotely Operated Vehicle pilots for obtaining certificate "ROV Pilot/Technician Grade II" implemented into Distance Learning System (DLS).

After self-education in DLS students pass the electronic test, positive results of which confirm the mastering of theoretical material and readiness for practical lessons.

Second stage (one week) is organized in Moscow.

During practical training students gain the following practical skills and experience:

  • work in the team, mutual help and communication;
  • choice of instrument, required for technical maintenance;
  • safe routine and technical maintenance;
  • ROV technical maintenance;
  • ROV fault finding;
  • reports on the progress of works and recording;
  • use ROV control organs;
  • ROV control in the normal environmental conditions;
  • ROV pre-dive check and post-dive check;
  • Participation in ROV launch and recovery operations.

Training is performed on observation ROVs. But one should not underestimate the abilities of these machines or competence level, required for effective small-scale ROV control.

During practice there are familiarization exercises on ROV Piloting Simulator.

On the third stage at the last day of training there is knowledge evaluation of theoretical knowledge and practical skills. For evaluation of the achieved practical skills student is given the tasks including demonstration of the full list of piloting skills.

Knowledge evaluation is performed in STORM Training Centre office in the form of computer testing and colloquium.

At the end of training each student is issued:

  • Filled in "IMCA ROV Personnel Logbook";
  • "ROV Pilot Technician Grade II" Certificate;
  • Video record of the performed examination practical tasks, on electronic media;
  • Set of study materials, including materials for Maritime English study.

Remark. There are no legislative requirements for ROV personnel qualification, Completing any of the above mentioned courses is formally not a basis for recruitment. IMCA recommends candidates to discuss the matters of recruitment with the contractors before making a decision on training courses completion.
